Bal Swan - Where Every Child is Special

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world" - Gandhi

Volunteering at Bal Swan Children’s Center is a heart-warming and often life changing experience. To see the power of love and caring in action improving the lives of children is an indescribable experience.

Volunteers are the backbone of the Bal Swan program. We have great volunteer involvement from both the local community, our sponsors and donors (individual and corporate) and current parents/past parents.

Volunteers work in the classroom, provide routine and special maintenance and grounds keeping services, and plan and implement special events and other fundraising activities. Each summer we have between nine and 12 high school students who volunteer in our classrooms. Several businesses in the community have adopted a classroom and provide valuable year-round volunteer and in-kind support to their teachers and students. We also have several annual volunteer workdays where companies, religious groups or other organizations come to volunteer their services for a day.

Bal Swan is honored to have more than 330 active volunteers ranging in age from 14 years to over 80. Last year volunteers logged more than 5,380 hours in support of our programs and services.

Our Board of Directors is made up entirely of volunteers. Some of our board members were past or are current parents and others are volunteers from the community who previously had no connection to the school. The board meets as a whole committee on a semi-monthly basis. Smaller committees meet throughout the month.

We have two volunteer-run fundraisers each year. One of them is Golf 4 Kidz, our annual golf tournament and auction which is held in June. We also have the Bal Swan Ball, which is a dinner, dance and auction held in March. Both of these committees begin meeting at least seven months prior to the event. There are between 17 and 25 volunteers on each committee.

Volunteers also help with field trips, office jobs (phone calls, stuffing/mailing envelopes), assisting with our swimming programs and lending a hand in the classroom.

We have one volunteer who has been giving her time at the school since it began in 1963, nearly 45 years ago. We have volunteer help throughout the year working on projects including making sand boxes, painting the building and doing odd jobs like applying weed killer to the lawn and fixing tricycles.

And we can always use another pair of hands! If you are interested in volunteering at Bal Swan Children’s Center please contact the school at 303-466-6308.
